The user greeting area (with the 'welcome' message and info about new private messages, etc.) does not appear on Firefox 2.x or 3.x.
I have not looked deeply into it, but it looks like something is dynamically altering your styles on the fly, setting the welcome area to not display.

It could be that, or it could be that the picture of the cow is too wide and obfuscating the user greeting area. You could try to put it on a separate row.

Thanks distantlight -- yes I noticed this same thing and I am using IE 7.x
I took a quick look at the source and noticed the html code is <br /> with a space rather than <b/> just after the gif and wondered if that might have something to do with it? unfortunately I am not that educated about even simple code but plan to look into it.
If you have any further insights - I appreciate it.

No, <br /> is actually the correct way to do it.
Anyway, the the issue is being caused by some javascript that is dynamically hiding that table column (I turned off javascript on my browser and the problem did not occur). Quite likely it is either some script that proboards adds, or one of the advertisement scripts.
Can't say much more than that, since I can't see what your editing interface looks like. Should probably see if proboards has any technical support to offer with the problem
